    James Kyle Dall was the first headmaster of Elmfield College, Heworth, York (Booth 1990:29). Born at Preston in Lancashire, the son of John Dall, he entered Trinity College, Dublin in October 1845 at the age of 21, and graduated BA in 1850. He had been a schoolmaster in Leeds before moving to Elmfield, where he worked closely with John Petty, its first Governor.

    Gertrude Maretta Paul (6 September 1934 –7 January 1992) was a teacher and advocate for the British Caribbean community in Yorkshire. She was the first black teacher in Leeds, and the city's first black headteacher. She was one of the founders of the Leeds West Indian Carnival, one of the longest running West Indian carnivals in Europe. She was a co-founder and President of the United Caribbean Association in Leeds, and also served on the Commission for Racial Equality.
