Steven Parent would become the first victim in a two-night murder-spree by the Manson Family.
On the night of August 8, 1969, Steve went to 10050 Cielo Drive to visit his friend William Garretson, the property’s caretaker, who was living in the guesthouse. The two met several weeks earlier, when Steve picked up Garretson hitchhiking. Steve wanted to sell Garretson a clock-radio he brought with him. Garretson wasn’t interested and Steve left the guesthouse shortly after midnight.
Steve drove down the driveway and stopped to open the electronic gate. As he rolled down his window, a person came up to him and shouted “Halt!” That person was Charles “Tex” Watson. Watson was holding a .22 revolver in one hand and a Buck knife in the other. Watson swung the knife at Steve. Steve raised his arm to defend himself, Watson cut Steve’s arm, severing his watch off his wrist. Then Watson shot Steve in the face, chest and abdomen. Steve was 18 years old when he died.
Steve was buried at Queen of Heaven Cemetery on August 13, 1969.
