Donald John Trump is an American politician, media personality, and businessman who served as the 45th president of the United States and head of state from 2017 to 2021.
Background
Trump was born on June 14, 1946 at the Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in Queens, New York City, New York. He is the son of Mary Trump (née Macleod) and Fred Trump, a real estate millionaire. His mother was a Scottish immigrant who initially worked as a maid. His father was born in New York, to German parents.
Donald Trump's grandfather, Friedrich Trump, was born in Kallstadt, Germany, in 1869. He emigrated to the United States in 1885, seeking to escape compulsory military service. Friedrich initially worked as a barber before venturing into various businesses, including owning saloons and hotels during the Klondike Gold Rush.
He returned to Germany briefly to marry Elisabeth Christ but was compelled to return to the US because of German laws prohibiting citizens from re-emigrating.
They had three children, including Fred Trump Sr (Donald Trump's father).
Friedrich and Elisabeth's second child, Fred Trump Sr., was born in the Bronx, New York, in 1905. An enterprising individual from a young age, Fred started his own construction business while still in high school. He went on to become a successful real estate developer in New York, specializing in building affordable housing. His keen business acumen and ability to capitalize on federal housing programs allowed him to amass significant wealth.
Fred Sr.'s wife, Mary Anne MacLeod, was born in Tong, Isle of Lewis, Scotland, in 1912. She immigrated to the United States in 1930 and worked as a domestic servant before marrying Fred Trump Sr. in 1936.
Mary Anne was known for her strong work ethic and traditional values, which she instilled in her children.
Donald Trump, born on June 14, 1946, at Jamaica Hospital in Queens, New York City, entered a family already steeped in the American dream. His father's success laid a strong foundation for the Trump family dynasty, with the family's wealth and influence growing substantially during Donald's formative years.
Donald was the fourth of five children in the Trump family. His siblings include Maryanne, a federal judge; Fred Jr., an airline pilot who tragically passed away young; Elizabeth, a retired banking executive; and Robert, who was involved in the family business before his passing in 2020. The family's focus on real estate and development was evident from an early age, with Fred Sr. instilling a sense of business acumen and drive in his children.
Growing up in a wealthy and ambitious household, Donald was poised to follow in his father's footsteps. His place in the Trump dynasty was marked by a blend of inherited opportunity and a personal drive to make a significant impact on the business world. This background set the stage for his later ventures into real estate, media, and eventually, politics.
From kindergarten through seventh grade, he attended the Kew-Forest School. At age 13, he enrolled in the New York Military Academy.
Donald Trump attended New York Military Academy (1959–64), a private boarding school; Fordham University in the Bronx (1964–66); and the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Finance and Commerce (1966–68), where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics.
In 1968, during the Vietnam War, he secured a diagnosis of bone spurs, which qualified him for a medical exemption from the military draft (he had earlier received four draft deferments for education purposes).
Upon his graduation Trump began working full-time for his father’s business, helping to manage its holdings of rental housing, then estimated at between 10,000 and 22,000 units.
From 1971 to 2017, he was chairman and president of his family real estate company, Elizabeth Trump & Son (now called The Trump Organization), which was founded in 1923 by his grandmother and father. His business career primarily focused on building or renovating office towers, hotels, casinos, and golf courses.
On May 30, 2024, Trump became the first former president to be convicted of a crime when a New York state jury convicted him on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in connection with a hush-money payment in 2016 to the adult-film star Stephanie Clifford, known as Stormy Daniels, who claimed to have had an affair with Trump in 2006.
Trump was later indicted on dozens of other federal and state charges in cases relating to his efforts to overturn Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election and his removal of numerous classified documents from the White House on his last day of office.
Trump was also found liable in a major civil suit alleging business fraud in New York state and two civil suits accusing him of sexually abusing and defaming the writer E. Jean Carroll. With the start of his trial in the business-records case on April 15, 2024, Trump became the first former president to stand trial on criminal charges.
