Bhupen Hazarika ( ) (8 September 1926 – 5 November 2011) was an Indian playback singer, lyricist, musician, poet and filmmaker from Assam, widely known as Xudha kontho (meaning cuckoo, literally "nectar-throated"). His songs, written and sung mainly in the Assamese language by himself, are marked by humanity and universal brotherhood and have been translated and sung in many languages, most notably in Bengali and Hindi. His songs, based on the themes of communal amity, universal justice and empathy, are especially popular among the people of Assam (India), West Bengal and Bangladesh. He is also acknowledged to have introduced the culture and folk music of Assam and Northeast India to Hindi cinema at the national level. He received the National Film Award for Best Music Direction in 1975, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1987), Padmashri (1977), and Padmabhushan (2001), Dada Saheb Phalke Award (1992), the highest award for cinema in India and Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship (2008), the highest award of the Sangeet Natak Akademi. He was posthumously awarded both the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian award, in 2012, and the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, in 2019. Hazarika also held the position of the Chairman of the Sangeet Natak Akademi from December 1998 to December 2003.

Homen Borgohain (7 December 1932 - 12 May 2021) was an eminent Assamese author and journalist. He had worked as the editor in chief of Assamese daily Niyomiya Barta until his death. He was awarded the 1978 Sahitya Akademi Award in Assamese language for his novel Pita Putra. Borgohain also wrote several novels, short stories and poetry. He was also the President of Assam Sahitya Sabha.

Lakshminath Bezbarua (14 October 1864 – 26 March 1938), was an Indian poet, novelist and playwright of modern Assamese literature. He was one of the literary stalwarts of the Jonaki Era, the age of romanticism in Assamese literature when through his essays, plays, fiction, poetry and satires, he gave a new impetus to the then stagnating Assamese literary caravan.

Hemchandra Goswami (1872–1928) was an Indian writer, poet, historian, teacher and a linguist from Assam in the early part of modern Assamese literature. He was the fourth president of the Asom Sahitya Sabha in 1920 held at Tezpur. He retired as Extra Assistant Commissioner in the British Assam..

Padmanath Gohain Baruah (Assamese: পদ্মনাথ গোহাঞি বৰুৱা; 1871–1946) was the first president of Asam Sahitya Sabha and a prominent name in the early part of modern Assamese literature. He was a novelist, poet, dramatist of excellence, analyst and a thought provoking writer. Considering his towering personality and profound knowledge, he is regarded as the "Pitamaha" (great grandfather) in Assamese literary world. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Assamese literature and society, the British government gave him Raibahadur title, a rare honour conferred for the first time to an Assamese person. He was also the first literary pensioner of Assam.

Jatindra Nath Duwara (Assamese: যতীন্দ্ৰনাথ দুৱৰা; 1892-1964) was a notable poet of the Jonaki era of Assamese literature. Duwara is known as Bonphulor kobi in the Assamese literacy society. He was the first writer awarded with Sahitya Akademi Award in 1955 for his poetry book "Bon Phul". He was the president of the Assam Sahitya Sabha, the premier literary organization of Assam in 1955 which was held at Dhuburi district.

Nabakanta Barua (29 December 1926 – 14 July 2002) was a prominent Assamese novelist and poet. He was also known as Ekhud Kokaideu. As Sima Dutta he wrote many poems in his early life.

Amrit Bhushan Dev Adhikari (Assamese: অমৃতভূষণ দেৱ অধিকাৰী; 1858–1942). Back in 1810 Saka (Shaka era), king of gauripur, Bahadur organised "All Goalpara convention". The hidden agenda behind this was to make Goalpara a Bengali speaking district. But not even the king of Goalpara, Prabhat Chandra Baruah came to know about this. Amritbhusan Dev Adhikari was one of the many exponents who threw apart this conspiracy. Amritbhusan Dev Adhikari was a sincere and dedicated person. He wrote regular columns and articles in contemporary magazines of the time like Ba'hi, Abwahan. He was a scholar in Sanskrit literature.

Nirmal Prabha Bordoloi (1932/1933 – 1 June 2004) was an eminent Indian poet, lyricist and folklorist associated with Assamese literature. She was the president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha in 1991 held at Dudhnoi in Goalpara district of Assam. She was honoured with many notable awards like Sahitya Akademi Award in 1983 for her poetry book Sudirgha Din Aru Ritu, President award in 1957 for children's literature and the Asam Sahitya Sabha award twice in 1977 and 1989 for her scholarly non-fiction books `Dinar Pisat Din' and `Debi', respectively. She was conferred the `Saraswati Sanman' title in 1987.

Syed Abdul Malik (1919–2000) was a notable writer of Assamese literature, from the village of Nahoroni in Golaghat. He was the president of Asam Sahitya Sabha in 1977 held at Abhayapuri.
